Eyeglass lenses bend light to focus images as the light enters your eye. A mono-focal lens bends light in one direction to help you see either far away or close-up images more clearly. Bi-focal lenses create two areas of vision correction in one lens, one to see faraway objects and one to close up, with a distinct line separating the two fields. Tri-focal lenses create three areas of vision correction in one lens, with distinct lines separating the areas on the lens.

Progressive lenses are multifocal, which means each lens creates several areas of vision correction in one lens. Unlike other lenses, though, they do not feature a sharp line separating the vision correction areas. That means these lenses provide smooth, seamless progression in vision correction, so you see clearly across the room, up close, and everywhere in between.

Some are better than are others. Certain manufacturers may cut corners to lower the cost of the lenses, but these savings come at a price when it comes to quality. Lenses of lesser quality may cause images to “swim” or become blurry and distorted when you move your head, for example, or transition poorly from distance to reading. One of the most common complaints about low-quality progressive lenses is that they provide poor vision in low light.
